Windy Wellington

Windy Wellington struck again when I tried to fly from Wellington to Nelson. Wellington is located at the bottom of the North island and Nelson is near the top of the South island. I was almost blown over trying to walk into Wellington airport. The wind was so bad that day that no flights landed or left the airport past 11 am. I had to return to the hostel I was staying at, but luckily I got the last bed in the hostel.

My flight was rescheduled for early the next morning, so I had breakfast at the airport. The wind was much better this time. I should mention that there was zero security for my flight. I walked into the airport and straight to my gate. No one even asked to see ID. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong, but that is just the way they do things. It was definitely odd, being American where no matter how far you're going you need to walk through a metal detector, take off your shoes, have your bags scanned, etc. I liked the change of pace.

On the flight I sat next to a woman who happened to know another American on our flight, Joanne. Everyone got to know each other a little bit in the time we all spent at our gate and my seat partner wanted to introduce me to Joanne. Joanne happened to be in Nelson for the weekend and we exchanged numbers. We would later visit Able Tasman together, on of NZ's most spectacular national parks.

Once I finally arrived at my hostel in Nelson, I was greeted with an inconsiderate roommate. The hostel itself was lovely, but I ended up taking a lovely walk through the Queen's garden's and treating myself to an Italian dinner after the day I had (and to get away from that awful roommate). I had a Merlot from a Nelson vineyard and the entire meal was delicious. All in all, not a bad first day in Nelson.
